What Should I Do If I Lose a Filling?
If you lose a filling we recommend that you call us as soon as you can.
If you cannot be seen right away you can get over the counter temporary filling from a pharmacy. It is a putty type of material. What you need to do is break off a ball and put it around the tooth or in the hole, depending on the way the filling broke off. Press it down and secure it in the space. Bite down for about a minute (or more – check instructions on the particular product) in order for the temporary filling to replicate your bite. This is important as you could cause a trauma to the adjacent teeth if the bite is too high.
Remember this is only a temporary solution, necessary for you to protect the tooth until you come in for your appointment. The temporary filling may only last a week, therefore we recommend that you come in and see us no longer than that.
If you are experiencing any sensitivity and cannot be seen right away, apply a little clove oil to the sensitive area with a cotton swab. This will relief the pain. You can find clove oil in drug stores or in the spice aisle in supermarkets.
